VPN
Virtual Private Networking is a method of connecting remote sites to an organisation's network without direct cabling. This method of connecting remote workers or offices has come into its own with the mass availability of low cost internet connections in the form of broadband. For any organisation looking to deploy remote communication, a number of factors need to be considered in deciding if VPN is suitable, or what type of VPN is required.
Considerations for remote networking
Leaselines are a necessity for some companies for three main reasons:
- Connectivity needed at all sites:
A number of factors need to be taken into account when deciding what type of connectivity is needed at each location. For instance, a home worker will seldom need great speed to run their remote workplace, and down time only effects their productivity. Therefore a basic broadband based VPN would suit in almost all situations.
Conversely a head office supporting many outworkers or branch offices needs high speeds in and out, and any downtime will affect productivity across the board. A head office will therefore need either multiple connections for redundancy or a high availability connection like a lease line.
In most cases we would not recommend corporate networks to be Head Office centred - network fragmentation should always be considered. If you are planning a new roll-out or are revising your current network please call our main number and arrange a free advisory appointment.
- Security:
What sort of data is passing between offices? Where do the remote connections terminate on your internal network? These are some of the issues you need to address in designing your wide area network.
- Technical ability and support structure:
Most organisation's Wide Area Networks evolve, rather than being designed from the ground up. This often means that there are a wide array of hardware and software being pressed into operating the corporate WAN. This also leads to a heavy support work load and long lead times for new staff to become network savvy. Airband have experience in deploying new VPN structures while saving current systems.
