Why have a leaseline?
Leaselines are a necessity for some companies for three main reasons:
- Reliability
Lease lines typically come with a 99.9% performance guarantee plus a 24/7 service contract. Most leaselines are also fibre based and demonstrate excellent consistency.
- Speed
Lease lines are generally sold in synchronous bandwidths (up + down speed is equal) and is often chosen by organisations when more speed is needed than can be provided by broadband type connections. The biggest reason today is more upspeed for offices serving information to the internet or to other offices/customers.
- Security
Particularly in respect to leaselines between offices, security is at its highest with a lease line. Interoffice connections are generally a single fibre terminated at each office, giving the ultimate in security. Internet lease lines generally run through the BT backbone and are then handed off to the providing ISP's point of presence. Lease lines are also uncontended and thus full bandwidth is always available.
What are the alternatives?
Wireless broadband
Wireless broadband is becoming increasingly available throughout the UK. Wireless broadband offers both synchronous and high speed connections at a relatively low cost. Connections can be non-contended.
SDSL
(Sychronous Digital Subscriber Line)
This is a variant of ADSL designed for business and supports uncontended speeds up to 4Mbs. This line is only suitable for direct internet access. If interoffice connectivity is needed two SDSL circuits would be needed - one for each office.
SDSL is also available on the 350 largest UK exchanges.
Bonded ADSL
ADSL weakspots are its lack of upspeed and reliability. These issues can be overcome by mixing the right hardware and a supporting ISP. Multiple lines can be bonded together as one giving increased reliablity and speed. Airband have successfully bonded 14 ADSL connections to give one 30Mbs downspeed and 3Mbs up. Bonded ADSL is a low cost alternative when up speed is needed.
